Arsenal Join the Battle for 18-Year-Old French Prodigy, Likened to Wayne Rooney

Arsenal have joined the pursuit of one of French football’s top prospects, becoming the latest transfer news from the Gunners.

According to reports, Arsenal and several other English clubs are monitoring Rennes teenager Desire Doue. The young attacking midfielder’s impressive debut in Ligue 1 has drawn comparisons to Wayne Rooney’s emergence in the Premier League in 2002, a few years before Doue was born.

The Rennes star is approaching the conclusion of his second season as a mainstay in the first team, tallying eight goal contributions across 29 appearances in Ligue 1. His dynamic displays have attracted attention from several top clubs.

Per TBR, Arsenal are gearing up to vie for his services when the inevitable transfer scramble unfolds this summer. Manchester United are also in contention, alongside Aston Villa, Chelsea, and Newcastle United, who have been closely monitoring Doue’s progress.

Premier League suitors may hold a financial advantage over clubs like Barcelona and Napoli, both of whom are interested in the young talent.

At just 18 years old, featuring regularly in a top European league has drawn parallels between Doue’s ascent and Rooney’s breakthrough at Everton.

Arsenal will be optimistic that securing his signature could yield an impact akin to Rooney’s move to Manchester United.

Doue has represented France up to the Under-21 level, sharing the pitch with talents such as Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola, Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel, and Chelsea’s Malo Gusto.

Arsenal’s midfield spots are currently fiercely contested with Thomas Partey, Declan Rice, and captain Martin Odegaard leading the charge in the campaign’s final stretch.

However, a vacancy may arise soon, given Partey’s uncertain future and Jorginho’s contract situation.

Doue is valued at approximately £17 million by Transfermarkt, though his market value could command a significantly higher fee for Rennes.

Arsenal reportedly plan to bolster their midfield ranks this summer. Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi has long been on their radar, but the player seems hesitant to leave Spain.

Elsewhere, Everton’s Amadou Onana’s £60 million price tag may be prohibitive, potentially leading Aston Villa to intervene and prevent Douglas Luiz from joining the Gunners.
