One of the ‘Best Players in the Premier League’ – Wayne Rooney Likens Bukayo Saka to Arsenal Legend

Wayne Rooney showered praise on Bukayo Saka, singling out the Arsenal winger as among the Premier League’s best performers in recent times before Sunday’s match against Manchester United.

Saka, a key figure for both Arsenal and England, has thrived under Mikel Arteta’s leadership, proving instrumental in Arsenal’s pursuit of the Premier League title alongside Manchester City.

At just 22 years old, Saka is enjoying a stellar season, boasting 16 goals and nine assists in the Premier League alone. Rooney lauded his progress at Arsenal, highlighting his ascent as one of Europe’s top talents.

Speaking at Old Trafford, United legend Rooney said: ‘I think over the last couple of years he has been one of the best players in the Premier League.

‘I think what’s really refreshing with him nowadays you see the wide players always wanting to come inside, but he mixes it up.’

Rooney delved deeper into Saka’s prowess in unsettling opposing defences, drawing parallels between his gameplay and that of Arsenal legend Marc Overmars, renowned for clinching both the FA Cup and the Premier League with the London side. Overmars notched 40 goals across 141 outings for the Gunners before embarking on a stint with Barcelona.

‘He makes runs off the ball and beyond, a bit like Marc Overmars years ago, he’ll make them runs and behind. He’ll come inside, and he’s very effective,’ continued Rooney.

‘He scores goals, and he’s certainly a big game player. I think he’s such a clever player for such a young lad and his numbers, goals, assist, he’s got it, but he’s always a threat.

‘He’ll take the ball. He’s always a threat. And I think he what he does, he gives Arsenal outlets when they need it, but also he’ll create. So I think he’s such an important player for Arsenal,’ added Rooney.

Rooney also pointed out the standout performances of Kobbie Mainoo from Manchester United, who’s had a remarkable season and is vying for a spot in England’s European Championship squad.

Despite the challenges United faced this season, the 19-year-old has thrived. However, Rooney expressed concern that the senior players at the club aren’t providing enough support and guidance to Mainoo during matches.

‘Mainoo at the minute, he’s having to be the main player at times, which it’s too much for him,’ he said.

‘What we’re going to see, which is natural, is performance and drop, his confidence will drop, and he needs a bit of protection and I don’t think he’s getting it,’ added Rooney.
