Arsenal Could Get Robin van Persie Revenge on Man Utd If They Heed Ex-player’s Advice

Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit has urged Arsenal to consider making a surprising move for one of Manchester United’s players.

Petit specifically advocates for the signing of Jadon Sancho by Arsenal during this summer transfer window. He believes that such a move would be significant for Arsenal, not only in terms of strengthening their squad but also as a response to Manchester United’s previous acquisition of Robin van Persie.

Jadon Sancho’s departure from Manchester United in January, amidst reported tensions with Erik ten Hag, saw him return to Borussia Dortmund on a six-month loan deal.

Since his return to Dortmund, Sancho has made a notable impact, particularly in the Champions League semi-finals against PSG. His performances have thrust him back into the spotlight.

As Dortmund prepare to face Real Madrid in the final at Wembley on June 1, Sancho has the opportunity to further demonstrate his abilities and potentially influence his future club decisions.

Petit, celebrated for clinching a Premier League and FA Cup double with the Gunners during his inaugural season in 1997/98, advocates for Mikel Arteta to pursue his acquisition for Arsenal.

“I was saying how impressed I was with Jadon Sancho in the Champions League on commentary – he looks like a new player, so fit, thin and explosive,” the French World Cup winner told Grosvenor Sport.

“He’s like dynamite on the pitch. “He’s back to his best and Man United look so far away from them, so if Arsenal want him, why not? You can put the best player in the world at Man United at the moment and they’d look average in two months.”

Should Sancho make his way to north London and contribute to Arteta’s squad clinching the title in the 2024/25 season, a distinct possibility considering the formidable team Arteta has assembled at the Emirates, Arsenal supporters might finally relish in avenging United’s acquisition of Van Persie twelve years prior.

Van Persie’s departure to Old Trafford for a mere £22.5 million stunned Gunners fans, as he subsequently propelled his new team to Premier League glory with 30 goals.

United fans have taunted Arsenal for inadvertently facilitating their 20th league triumph, as Van Persie, after spending eight years with the Gunners and securing only one FA Cup, became a pivotal figure for the Red Devils.

Despite his age, the 40-year-old is still revered at Manchester United and received a hero’s welcome during a match against Aston Villa last December.

However, Petit is cautious about Arsenal exploiting the current unrest surrounding Bruno Fernandes at United. He believes that acquiring the United captain could potentially disrupt the harmony within the squad.

“To be honest, Martin Odegaard is a better player than him and I’m not that convinced with Fernandes,” he added. “He’s the captain and one of their better players, but I’m not sure Arsenal need him.

“Odegaard also has a better mentality and isn’t always upset, throwing his arms up in the air to his teammates.

“When you’re captain, you have to be a leader in difficult times and show why you’re the captain. The behaviour of Arsenal players and their commitment to the cause, I’m not sure Fernandes has the same standards.”

Whether Arsenal show any actual interest in Sancho or Fernandes is another matter entirely, however.
