Mikel Arteta Hints at How His Arsenal Starting XI Will Look Against Man City Following a Brutal Decision

Mikel Arteta appears to have made a significant decision ahead of this weekend’s Premier League match against Manchester City.

On Thursday evening, the Gunners launched their Champions League campaign with an away game against Atalanta, where David Raya emerged as the standout player, helping Arteta’s team secure a point in London.

The encounter in Bergamo was intense from the start, with few clear opportunities for either side. Gabriel Martinelli came closest for the visitors, but his close-range shot soared over the bar.

Substitute Juan Cuadrado also tried to score from distance on two occasions, but both attempts narrowly missed the target.**

The match’s key moment happened at the beginning of the second half when Thomas Partey was deemed to have fouled Ederson in the penalty area.

Following advice from goalkeeper coach Inaki Cana while VAR reviewed the decision, Raya saved Mateo Retegui’s penalty and then expertly denied the subsequent headed rebound.

“This season he’s been exceptional,” Arteta said of Raya in his press conference after the game. “The save he made against Villa and today kept us in the game. You need that from a goalkeeper at this level. I’m really happy he’s in that form at the moment.”

Thomas Partey has faced challenges this season, and his struggles continued in the match against the Europa League champions.

The Ghanaian midfielder lost possession multiple times and was often outmaneuvered in midfield, with his performance culminating in a penalty concession.

Typically, early substitutions are not Arteta’s style, but he made an exception by replacing both Gabriel Jesus, who is still regaining fitness, and Partey.

Leandro Trossard and Jorginho came onto the pitch, and Partey’s exit shortly after his mistake hints at Arteta’s strategic plans for the upcoming game against Manchester City.

With limited options in midfield, as Martin Odegaard and Mikel Merino are expected to be unavailable for several weeks, Partey’s lack of confidence may prevent him from starting in what is Arsenal’s most significant match to date this season.

Jorginho performed impressively against Tottenham last weekend, positioning him as a strong candidate for the starting role at the base of midfield.

Declan Rice, who returned from suspension in the match against Atalanta, is expected to retain his place, alongside Kai Havertz in the midfield setup.

Given his recent injury concerns, it seems improbable that Jesus will maintain his starting position. Thus, Trossard is likely to return to the forward line, flanked by Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli on the wings.
