Arsenal Legend Questions Referee After Jeremy Doku Avoided Identical Leandro Trossard Booking
Paul Merson have questioned why Manchester City player Jeremy Doku was not given a yellow card in the first half after he delayed the restart of play.
In a highly anticipated match between Premier League leaders, Arsenal traveled to Manchester, hoping to secure their first victory against the reigning champions since 2015.
It seemed like Arsenal’s unfortunate record was going to continue when, after just nine minutes, Erling Haaland put Manchester City ahead. He capitalised on a stagnant Gunners defence, scoring a well-timed goal.
However, Arsenal responded unexpectedly when their new signing, Riccardo Calafiori, scored a stunning goal. He struck the ball with his left foot from just outside the area, sending it past Ederson and into the top corner.
Gabriel added to Arsenal’s momentum by scoring from close range after a perfectly delivered Bukayo Saka corner, giving the visitors a lead just before halftime.
Despite Arsenal’s efforts, things took a turn for the worse six minutes into added time. Leandro Trossard was shown a second yellow card for delaying the restart by kicking the ball away, resulting in his dismissal.
During halftime on Sky Sports, Arsenal legend Paul Merson highlighted the inconsistency in officiating.
He pointed out that Doku had also delayed the restart earlier in the game by kicking the ball back into Arsenal’s half, but the referee opted not to book him.
