‘It’s Hypøcrisy’: Chris Sutton Calls Out Man City Player for What He Said About Arsenal After PL Clash
The aftermath of Manchester City’s match against Arsenal continues to stir controversy a day later, with Chris Sutton expressing his dissatisfaction with comments made by City defender John Stones.
A late equalizer from Stones secured a point for City in a dramatic finish. The match has sparked numerous discussions, with many reflecting on key moments during the game.
One of the main talking points has been the red card issued to Arsenal’s Leandro Trossard. Former referee Dermot Gallagher believes neither Trossard nor Arsenal can contest the decision. However, the fallout from the match goes beyond this incident.
During the second half, Arsenal were forced to defend deeply, essentially positioning themselves on the edge of the penalty area for much of the last 45 minutes.
John Stones later commented that Arsenal’s defensive approach had somewhat spoiled the flow of the game.
“I don’t know if they have mastered it, they’ve done it for a few years, and we know to expect that. You can call it clever, or dirty, whichever way you want to put it. They break up the game, and it upsets the rhythm for everyone,” Stones said.
However, although Stone raises a point that some may support, Chris Sutton has implied that the City defender is acting somewhat hypocritically.
Chris Sutton Unhappy with John Stones for His Comments on Arsenal
On the “It’s All Kicking Off“ podcast, Sutton suggested that Stones tone it down, noting that every team engages in similar behavior throughout the season.
“How effective they are from set plays. I mean, what was evident was the time wasting. But everybody does it, Ian,” Sutton said.
“Every team does it. And then when it goes against them, you know, everybody starts whinging and moaning. It’s hypocrisy from John Stones.
“Maybe Manchester City are one of those teams because they’re so superior who don’t need to do it as much as anybody else.
“But I think had they been in the same position, down to 10 men, I mean, David Rea, who had a marvellous game, every time he collected the ball, I mean, there’s that six second rule, isn’t there, for goalkeepers? I was actually counting.”
There has been significant discussion among pundits following this match, as it appeared to reignite a genuine rivalry.
John Stones’ remarks, especially as a £47m signing, indicate that Arsenal now pose a serious challenge to Manchester City. While City continue to claim the major trophies, they are aware that the Gunners have the potential to halt their dominance.
Had Arsenal managed to secure a victory and maintain their lead, it would have signaled a major shift in momentum, potentially providing other teams with a strategy to earn points against Guardiola’s squad.
One thing is clear: City understood they were in a tough contest, and Stones’ post-match comments reflect just how intense that battle was.
