“There’s No Need…” – BBC Pundit Drops Honest Verdict on Arsenal Star Saliba’s Red Card Against Bournemouth
Arsenal’s William Saliba received a red card during their 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday evening, marking the Gunners’ first loss of the season.
Although initially shown a yellow card, BBC pundit Alan Shearer supported the decision, stating that Saliba’s dismissal was “definitely the right decision.”
The incident happened after a poor backpass from Leandro Trossard around the 30-minute mark, which allowed Bournemouth striker Evanilson to intercept the ball before being pulled back by Saliba.
Referee Rob Jones first issued a yellow card, but after consulting the VAR screen, he upgraded it to a red. Shearer, along with fellow pundits Shay Given and Gary Lineker, agreed that the final decision was correct.
Alan Shearer: Saliba Sending Off ‘The Right Call’
On Match of the Day, Shearer commented that Saliba didn’t need to foul Evanilson in the incident that contributed to Arsenal’s defeat, saying:
“It was definitely the right decision, they got there in the end. There’s no need to foul him because there’s still a long way to go and so much to do. But there’s no way [Ben] White is getting back. There’s no doubt about it, is there Shay [Given]? It’s a clear red card.”
Shearer backed this view, with the Premier League goalkeeping veteran questioning referee Jones’ choice to only issue an initial caution to Saliba, as he remarked:
“Yeah, I think it’s the right decision. I don’t understand why Rob Jones gave him a yellow card to start with, Gary [Lineker]. But at the end of the day, they made the right decision.”
Arsenal are currently just one point behind league leaders Liverpool, who have an opportunity to extend their lead to four points with a win over Chelsea later on Sunday.
This result could create a significant gap between Liverpool and the north London club as we approach November.
Since their FA Cup victory in 2020, Mikel Arteta’s team has not secured a major trophy. After coming close to Premier League success in the past two seasons, Arteta will be focused on ensuring his players capture a significant title this season.
